The Kern Valley Railroad consisted of 33 miles of track extending from Trinidad, CO to the end of the line near Weston, CO. The railroad interchanges with the Burlington Northern and Sante Fe Railway (BNSF) and the Union Pacific Railroad (UP) at Trinidad, CO. Traffic on the Kern Valley Railroad consisted mainly of coal. Today, the line is idle awaiting the reopening of the mine.
The rail line opened in 1901 by the Colorado & Wyoming Railway Company. The Kern Valley Railroad assumed ownership and operation of the line in 2000.
